Idaho's Red Horse Mountain Ranch is known for its all-inclusive dude ranch vacations, including an extensive list of guided adventures, well appointed accommodations, first rate western hospitality, and a famous Kids Program for ages 3 and up. Located on 560 deeded acres, with over 300,000 acres of outfitter area, the ranch is a perfect location for a western dude ranch vacation. Full service, all-inclusive, week long dude ranch vacations are available from May through October.

Red Horse Mountain Ranch is tucked away on a private road 5 miles off Highway 97 at the foothills of the Coeur d'Alene Mountains, surrounded by Idaho Panhandle National Forest, BLM lands and private property. The ranch is situated at the base of Red Horse Mountain, with seasonal Blue Lake Creek running through the heart of the valley.

Good time to go

Our favorite times at the ranch include June when the scenery is exploding with every shade of green, mid July when the kids program is rolling full steam ahead, and September when the valley is quiet, peaceful and ablaze with fall color. You really can't go wrong though.

Children at the Ranch

Great for children aged 3 and over

Ages 3-10 ride in our Children's Program. We are one of few ranches out there who offer horseback riding programs for children 3 to 6 years - this is definitely something you'll love that sets us apart. With safety at the top of our mind, your child has the opportunity to fall in love with horses at an early age. Our children's program allows your child to ride the trail while being led by our trusted wranglers. Ride length is specifically devised for the interest of your child. If your child is able to handle the horse by him or herself, your child can ride next to a wrangler without being led. Children do everything that adults do, but at a kid's pace! Because we care about the safety of your child, it is mandatory that children under the age of 14 wear a helmet.

Ranch History

Our Riding

Scheduled rides

Scenic orientation ride the first day of arrival. Family, Advanced, Scenic, All-Day Rides. Rides begin 9:30 am and 1:30 pm.

Good to know

We make sure you and your horse are ready to kick it up a notch before heading out on the trail. All riders wishing to do the Advanced Ride, regardless of riding experience, will be tested by our wranglers in the arena beforehand, allowing us to evaluate your ability to control your horse and stay in the saddle at faster gaits. Once passed, there are 3 advanced rides through the week, riding on specified trails and changing gaits throughout the ride. Rides last approximately 2 hours.

Weight limit for riding

225-250 lbs

Riding considerations

no riding experience needed, We recommend a good level of physical fitness, Riders should be confident without a wrangler by their side, We offer accessible riding programs for riders with varying needs, We consider height and athletic ability as well as a guest's weight

Why our riding stands out

  • Each guest can be assured to have the same horse and fitted saddle throughout their entire stay. Riders have at least two opportunities for exhilarating, western-style horseback riding each day. There are rides scheduled throughout the week for all skill levels. All horseback rides leave from the valley floor and travel to unique vistas, viewpoints, or peaks.
  • Each little buckaroo age 3 and older is paired with their own horse and saddle, just like mom and dad or their big brother or sister. In fact, RHMR is one of the few ranches that allows kids ages 3-6 to experience real horseback trail riding.
  • Red Horse Mountain Ranch has been a Dude Ranchers’ Association Horse Safety Program member since it’s beginning. The program reflects our responsibility to give guest riders enjoyable horseback riding vacations along with exercising the highest degree of care.

Lessons are designed by your wrangler or the barn manager to offer instruction to increase the abilities of the rider. Please just visit with barn manager or wrangler to set up a time throughout the week.

Local Attractions

Coeur d'Alene Lake

Coeur d’Alene Lake is the second largest lake in northern Idaho, caught in a beautiful mountain setting created when  great lobes of the continental ice cap receded during the last Ice Age. The lake is over 26 miles long with some 135 miles of shoreline, dotted with numerous parks, campgrounds, beaches, trails and recreational facilities. The lake is fed primarily by two rivers, the Coeur d’Alene River and St. Joe River, and its outlet forms the Spokane River. A natural lake, the lake level is controlled by discharges from the Post Falls Dam operated by Avista.

Park, Beaches and Trails: There are more than a dozen well maintained boat ramps around the lake. Right in Coeur d’Alene proper are City Park and Beach with extensive sandy beaches, trails, ball courts, volleyball and more; and Tubbs Hill, a 165-acre natural peninsula with miles of hiking trails offering spectacular scenery. The North Idaho Centennial Trail runs along miles of waterfront, through the city to Higgins Point. Out of the city, major parks include Heyburn State Park, Mineral Ridge, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alene’s and Beauty Bay.

Boating: There are more than a dozen well maintained boat launches around the lake. Several companies offer rentals of watercraft ranging from jet skis and ski boats to pontoon boats to sailboats and stand-up paddle boards. There are nine major marinas on the lake with fuel docks, food and services.

Wildlife: One of the great wildlife spectacles of the region, each winter from November through February a migrating population of bald eagles visits the Lake Coeur d’ Alene area to feed on spawning kokanee salmon in Wolf Lodge Bay. The number varies each year, but more than 200 of the majestic birds have been spotted in some prime seasons. Swans, geese, ducks and ospreys are also abundant around the lake in spring and summer.

Fishing: The lake hosts a variety of sport fisheries; it’s especially noted for its chinook salmon. But fishermen also enjoy fishing for trout, smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike and kokanee salmon. There are a number of charter fishing companies and fishing guide services.
